SADDLE RIVER DEER SURVEY 2025

Protecting Our Environment, Health, and Community

What Was Done

In April 2025, Saddle River partnered with the Center for Environmental Studies at Raritan Valley Community College to conduct a scientific drone survey using thermal imaging. The goal: to accurately assess our local deer population and inform responsible wildlife management decisions.

Key Findings

Date of Survey: April 4, 2025

Area Surveyed: 5.38 square miles (entire borough)

Deer Counted: 228

Deer Density: 42 deer per square mile

Target Healthy Density: ~10 deer per square mile

Result: Over 4× the ecologically sustainable level

Why This Matters

Environmental Damage

Too many deer harm native plants, prevent tree growth, and disrupt forest ecosystems.

Up to 32% of Saddle River has deer densities over 50 deer/mi²—an extremely high level causing long-term environmental stress.

Public Safety

High deer populations increase the risk of vehicle collisions, especially during peak movement seasons.

Reducing deer numbers has been proven to lower accident rates in NJ communities.

Health Concerns

Deer are a major carrier of ticks that spread Lyme disease and other illnesses. Lower deer numbers = lower tick populations.

Economic Impact

Excessive deer cause damage to landscaping, agriculture, and drive up municipal and private costs.

Next Steps for Our Community

  • Continue and possibly expand Saddle River’s deer management program
  • Establish a non lethal deer management program approved by the state
  • Monitor impact through follow-up surveys and tracking deer-vehicle collisions
  • Use science-based targets to preserve both safety and biodiversity
  • Educate residents on the importance of balance in local wildlife

Our Shared Goal

To protect the natural beauty of Saddle River, reduce risks to residents, and restore ecological balance, we must act on the data. Together, we can maintain a safe, healthy, and environmentally sound community for generations to come.
