Monitoring and enforcement of all applicable federal, state and local environmental health laws and regulations, as they apply to bathing places, youth camps, food surveillance, housing, insect and rodent infestations, tobacco products age of sale restrictions, potable water, sewage disposal systems and air, noise, and stream pollution control.

 Preventive Health Services

Hypertension Screening:
The Board of Health sponsors a monthly Hypertension/Health Clinic on the first Wednesday of each month, from 1pm to 3pm, at the Borough of Saddle River. The Clinic is open to all residents over 50 years of age who are interested in having their blood pressure checked, or update their knowledge of ailments and treatments, how to exercise, cook non-cholesterol recipes, receive general health education, and information on the availability of screenings for certain types of cancer. The Board of Health sponsors a low cost influenza and pneumonia immunization program that is generally held at the Borough Hall during October or November for seniors who are 65 and over. Watch for further information and flu program announcements.

 Student Assistance Program

Under an agreement that is supported by the Saddle River Board of Health, West Bergen Mental Health Center provides the following services for children and youth of Saddle River:
  • Substance abuse and mental health assessment
  • Family conferences
  • Liaison with school system professionals
  • Educational and preventive activities
  • Crisis intervention 
This program is meant to identify problems as early as possible and give parents the information they need to make informed choices about treatment. It addresses the full gamut of mental health concerns including school or behavior problems, drug or alcohol experimentation / abuse, and family conflict. The services will be provided by a team of professional therapists, drug and alcohol counselors, psychiatrists and social workers from the Center for Children and Youth located in Ramsey. The center services children and adolescents age 2 through 18 years as well as their families.

After the initial phase of interview and assessment, outpatient treatment will be provided at the Center for Children and Youth. Families may utilize their health insurance or apply for a sliding fee scale based upon the family’s ability to pay. Children needing inpatient care or services other than those provided by the center will be referred to the appropriate hospitals, social service providers or other community resources.

THE SERVICE IS ABSOLUTELY CONFIDENTIAL AND THE INITIAL ASSESSMENT PROCESS IS FREE OF CHARGE TO ANY FAMILY LIVING IN SADDLE RIVER.

The program also provides ongoing educational and prevention services covering a variety of child and family issues. Specific programs announced in the press, library or other community bulletin boards. These can also be arranged in forums to accommodate the needs of parents and teachers. With advance arrangement professionals from the center will make themselves available to address topics of special concern. In addition, the center sponsors wellness / educational events, such as the community health day and substance abuse awareness.

Crisis intervention provides all necessary services of mental health professionals to assist children, school personnel and families in the event of a critical incident in the community.

 WMC Nutrition Program

The WIC program is a supplementary nutrition program for women, infants and children who are both nutritionally and financially in need. The program is generally held the first & third Monday of every month and every Thursday in the Hackensack City Civic Center, 215 State Street, Hackensack, from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM. The Saddle River Bureau of Vital Statistics maintains records of births, marriages and deaths that have occurred in the Borough of Saddle River and issues marriage licenses.
